Bowen

"It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self and intelligence”

What is Bowen?

Bowen is a state-of-the-art healing technique.

Subtle moves are preformed over muscle and connective tissues sending messages deep into the body, retrieving cellular memory of a preferred, relaxed, balanced way of wellbeing. It is safe to use alongside orthodox medicine and so gentle that it can be performed on the new born to the elderly.
Bowen not only addresses the musculoskeletal framework, but also the fascia, nerves and internal organs.

Generally, only a few sessions are required for most common presenting problems.  Complex chronic conditions may require longer treatment but not always.  These are spread out between 3 to 10 days apart for maximum benefit, a later follow up session maybe beneficial or if symptoms or injury reoccurs.  It is best to be seen as soon as possible after you receive discomfort from the injury or ailment as this can prevent longer treatment being necessary.

Unlike many hands-on therapies Bowen Technique does not use forceful manipulation.  A unique skill of releasing “tissue tension” means that stress built up in the muscles and other soft tissue enables specific Bowen moves to assist recovery.  There are frequent but essential pauses throughout the session that allows the body to respond and start the healing process.

Bowen can improve circulation, lymphatic drainage and elimination of toxins.

The History of Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy, also known as the Bowen Technique, is a holistic healing method that originated in Australia. This gentle and non-invasive therapy has gained worldwide recognition for its effectiveness in promoting pain relief and overall wellness.

Origins of Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy was developed by Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982) in the 1950s in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Tom Bowen was a gifted healer with no formal medical training, yet he possessed an extraordinary ability to sense and correct imbalances in the human body. He started his career working as a carpenter and later as an industrial chemist, but his true calling emerged when he began exploring alternative healing techniques.

Tom Bowen's unique approach involved using his hands to make precise, gentle rolling movements over muscles, tendons, and connective tissue. These moves stimulate the body's self-healing mechanisms, promoting pain relief and recovery. Bowen's technique was unlike any other modality at the time, as it required minimal physical intervention and allowed the body to reset and heal itself.

Development and Recognition

In the early years, Tom Bowen's reputation as a healer spread through word of mouth. By the 1970s, he was treating thousands of patients annually, often seeing as many as 13,000 people a year. His clinic became a hub for those seeking relief from a wide range of conditions, including musculoskeletal issues, sports injuries, and chronic pain.

Bowen's technique gained further recognition when it caught the attention of Oswald Rentsch, an osteopath and natural therapist. Rentsch and his wife, Elaine, became dedicated students of Bowen, spending years learning and documenting his methods. With Bowen's blessing, they began teaching the technique to others, ensuring its preservation and wider dissemination.

Global Expansion

After Tom Bowen's death in 1982, Oswald and Elaine Rentsch continued to promote and teach Bowen Therapy. They founded the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia (BTAA) in 1987 and established a structured training programme. The therapy rapidly gained popularity, spreading to Europe, North America, and beyond.

Today, Bowen Therapy is practised by thousands of therapists worldwide and is recognised as an effective complementary therapy for a wide range of conditions. It is praised for its holistic approach, which considers the whole person rather than just treating symptoms.

Principles of Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is based on several key principles:

  1. Gentle Touch: The therapy involves light, rolling movements over specific points on the body. These moves are gentle and can be performed through clothing, making it suitable for all ages and conditions.

  2. Pauses and Rest Periods: Between sets of moves, the therapist often pauses to allow the body time to respond and integrate the healing signals. These rest periods are crucial for the therapy's effectiveness.

  3. Holistic Approach: Bowen Therapy addresses the whole body, promoting balance and alignment. It aims to activate the body's innate healing abilities rather than imposing an external force.

  4. Minimal Intervention: The technique uses minimal physical intervention, relying on the body's response to the gentle stimuli. This approach reduces the risk of adverse effects and supports natural healing.
